Review

This is an exhibition catalogue of a dozen or so pages. There are nine full-color photographs, including the cover, and, although ten paintings are mentioned, the only one missing is the final version of one that is included in “study” form.

There is a well-written and informative introduction by Greg Bellerby, Chief Curator of The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, with information on various of the artist’s series as well as information about specific works. He also tells about the artist’s techniques and intents and explains some of the imagery.

Jeffrey Spalding is “an artist of many dimensions” who has “developed his own distinctive painting style and imagery.” These paintings are of scenes, interior or exterior, and rarely include people. Most are in dank tones, intended night, with an almost eerie light achieved by having the light source within the painting. One lovely piece, however — a shell on a beach — is in pink-beige and turquoise. For me the masterpiece is the study for “Night Fall,” a very simple, impressive, and abstracted view of Niagara Falls from near the top edge.

It’s an attractive catalogue, and well done.
