Review

First published in the United Kingdom in 1962, this is Faludy’s autobiography through 1953. He describes his 1938 flight from Budapest to France, his flight from France in 1941 to the United States (and his leading of the Free Hungary Movement), his return to Hungary after the war to a land controlled by the Communists, his arrest and immediate incarceration at a prison camp with the attendant tortures and deprivation, and his subsequent freedom in 1953. After that he found employment as a translator and moved from country to country until he came to Canada in 1967. During the past 30 years he has become widely known as a gifted poet.
