Review

Chas Winterton is a British paleographer who has lived 10 years in Egypt. He is an academic rebel, who scorns accepted methods of research and publication, and prefers to spend his time in solitary exploration. In a small Coptic monastery in the desert, Chas uncovers what he thinks is the original will of St. Peter — a manuscript which says that the fisherman did indeed die in Alexandria and not in Rome and, further, that Roman Catholicism’s branding of the Coptic sect as heretic was in itself a gross cover-up of the truth. What follows is intrigue, adventure, and murder as the Vatican, the CIA, and others vie for the manuscript.

The Adversary can be compared to a James Bond movie full of excitement and ingenious escapes. Kabal’s accounts of torture are as colourful as any in recent fiction. Highly recommended.
