Review

Jumping rope is hundreds of years old as an activity, and turns up in almost every country in the world. Skipping tones up muscles and conditions the heart and lungs. It can be done inside or outside, alone or with friends, to rhymes or to the beat of popular music.

In Skip to It! The New Skipping Book, Susan Kalbfleisch, a teacher with the City of Hamilton Board of Education and coach of the Canadian Heart Foundation’s demonstration skipping team, shows that skipping is fun and a terrific exercise. Susan takes skipping out of the playground and expands itinto school physical education and adult fitness programs.

Susan Kalbfleisch advocates a skipping program that includes warming-up and cooling-down exercises (both done without using a rope). Simple line drawings clearly illustrate the recommended steps.

This book puts a new light on an old topic. Skipping is a wonderful sport, which is why ithas passed the test of time so well. Teachers will find this a valuable resource for children of all ages!
