Review

This revised edition of Fowke’s very useful 1973 anthology contains an updated bibliography and discography. There has been no change to the introduction or in the main text of the book, which contains the words and music to 82 songs, but some of the “Notes on the Songs” have been expanded to reflect the bibliographical and discographical updates. It is a pity that these notes are buried at the back of the volume, as they give interesting and in some cases definitive information on the history and meaning of the songs.

This is a basic reference work for anyone with an interest in Canadian folksong, and it is good to have a revised edition available.
