Review

The author uses the concept of “trance” to present and discuss all
of the restrictions we have learned to place on our experience of the
world in which we live. Some trance states can be useful, as when we
focus on creative work and shut out distractions. Other trance states,
such as those learned from family, friends, or the groups we associate
with, may be dangerously restrictive or not in our best interest. Still
other trances are so culturally engrained that we are not even aware of
their existence.

Drawing upon his own life experiences and his training as both a priest
and psychotherapist, Crabtree outlines strategies for breaking out of
the trances of emotional, social, and cultural conditioning we have all
acquired. His writing is clear and accessible, and the examples he
provides are interesting and appropriate. Trance Zero is recommended for
those interested in personal growth and spiritual development.
