Review

Impressions of Historic Fredericton is a pictorial history with a
difference: all of the many illustrations are reproductions of original
paintings by the illustrator. Many of Poyatos’s paintings depict
winter scenes, perhaps because the absence of foliage during winter
brings out a building’s outline more clearly. Poyatos has succeeded in
capturing the grandeur and amazing architectural variety not only of the
government and university buildings and stately homes in downtown
Fredericton, but also of the buildings in adjoining communities on the
north side of the river. William Spray, who has taught Canadian and New
Brunswick history St. Thomas University, provides descriptions of the
paintings; we learn about the history of the buildings and about their
first occupants.

This handsome volume will delight not only residents and ex-residents
of Fredericton but also those who can appreciate a successful
collaboration between a skilled amateur painter and a professional
historian.
