Review

Sparrow Lake, which is roughly three miles long, borders the southern
rim of the Canadian Shield between Muskoka and Simcoe County in Ontario.
The author’s lifetime familiarity with the lake and its residents has
led him to write this excellent local history, which features an
illuminating collection of black-and-white postcards. McCraw uses
vintage postcards of the Sparrow Lake resorts to illustrate how modern
hotels and lodges evolved from the simple cabins of earlier times and
points out that with the expansion of the railway and the advent of
steamer travel Sparrow Lake became accessible to many families from
urban centres.

This engaging, beautifully produced book is recommended for Canadian
collections.
