Review

David Lai is a professor of geography at the University of Victoria.
Pamela Madoff is a Victoria municipal councillor and a preservation
consultant. This account of the 1995–96 campaign to refurbish a
ceremonial gateway in Victoria’s Chinatown, originally constructed in
1981, is a rather curious book, seemingly containing an undiscriminating
array of data, from the value of prizes awarded in a related student art
competition to the symbolic meaning of the figures in the gateway. The
book also includes fundraising details, which may be of interest to
community groups seeking to generate funds for local projects, a concise
history of Victoria’s Chinatown, and a walking tour of the area.
