Review

Published annually since 1994, this latest volume of Cheap Thrills adds
more than 50 new restaurants to the 30 retained from the previous
edition. The guide lists restaurants in the Montreal area where a good
meal can be had for $10 or less, exclusive of taxes and beverages. The
restaurant selection is based on the suggestions of more than 60
writers, media persons, and other acquaintances of the editors.

Each one-page entry includes the restaurant’s address, accessibility
by public transportation, telephone number, hours of operation,
availability of alcohol, acceptance of credit cards, and specialties of
the house with prices, as well as ambience and other unique
characteristics that might appeal to the prospective diner. Indexes list
each restaurant by name, specialty, and geographic area. The peculiar
difficulty (in part due to the French language) of finding a specific
restaurant in the Montreal telephone book is described in an appendix,
“The Sex of Restaurants,” by noted humorist Josh Freed. This handy
guide is recommended for Montrealers and tourists alike.
