Review

OWL’s Question and Answer Storybooks series has become known for
answering many of the childish questions that embarrassed parents
cannot. In this edition, Catherine Ripley deals with kitchen questions:
“Why do ice cubes crack?” (they’re trying to shrink!), “How does
blowing on food keep it cool?” and “Why does garbage smell?” As
always, her answers are clear, accurate, and devoid of condescension.
Each question and answer is spread across two pages, leaving plenty of
room for Scot Richie’s energetic illustrations. This is the sort of
book that can be enjoyed by parent and child, by child alone, or in the
classroom. Why Does Popcorn Pop? is bright, fun, and good value for the
money. Highly recommended.
