Review

“Pup and Hound leaped from their chair / They hitched a ride to the
county fair.”

The sounds of the words and the rhyming text are as much fun as the
mischief and mayhem in these two Kids Can Read, Level 1 readers. Not
surprisingly, in Pup and Hound, Lost and Found, Pup goes missing at the
fair the minute Hound’s back is turned. Hound’s tracking ability is
put to the test as he searches the fair grounds in and out and high and
low. In the end, rakish Pup is finally located—in charge of the
kissing booth.

Pup and Hound at Sea find the canine companions on a pirate adventure.
Pirate Captain Pup makes some friendly frogs walk the plank, pilots
their craft through rough seas, and when disaster strikes and the pair
are shipwrecked, it is Pup who unearths a buried treasure.

Though these amusing tales are easy enough to be read independently,
they just beg to be read aloud. Preschool and primary-grade children
will be enchanted by the antics of this lovable, furry pair. Linda
Hendry’s illustrations of the mischievous Pup and long-suffering Hound
expand and enhance Susan Hood’s rollicking rhymes perfectly. Highly
recommended.
