The Kids Can Do It series has produced two instructional books on sewing
techniques that are ideal for beginning crafters who require a simple,
clear, detailed instructional approach with pictorial support.
Simply Sewing opens with a list of sewing supplies with which to get
started, followed by information on fabric and such basic techniques as
threading a needle and ending stitches. Hand-sewing techniques and basic
sewing-machine stitches each have their own section. Twelve simple
projects—including pyjama pants, a makeup bag, a beach wrap, and
machine appliqué to embellish the finished product—complete the
manual.
Embroidery follows a similar format, starting with a list of essential
materials, embroidery basics (such as how to correctly use an embroidery
hoop), and transferring a pattern. The basic embroidery stitches are
followed by 10 projects suitable for adolescents, such as a CD pouch,
greeting cards, and embroidery on clothing.
Both books are characterized by easy-to-follow numbered instructions
and colour diagrams and photographs. Cross-references to other sections
of the books are included. Alternatives and further ideas are provided
in Simple Sewing in several addenda. Embroidery offers several
adaptations of its projects. Extras include appliqué patterns in the
former, and templates for motifs, letters, and numbers in the latter.
Highly recommended.
