Review

Author Jean Pendziwol and illustrator Martine Gourbault, creators of No
Dragons for Tea: Fire Safety for Kids (and Dragons), which was
recognized by the National Fire Prevention Association as a recommended
source for teaching fire safety, have teamed up again on A Treasure at
Sea for Dragon and Me: Water Safety for Kids (and Dragons). This
engaging tale manages to impart a number of water safety rules without
detracting from the enjoyment of the story.

A young girl goes to the beach with her dad and her friend Dragon.
While they are preparing for the outing, building a castle, pursuing
pirates, searching the water and beach for treasure, discovering a
treasure map, and finally enjoying the treasure (a picnic lunch), the
girl follows and urges Dragon to follow a number of safety rules. The
playful illustrations and lively text convey the girl’s energy and
imagination as she enjoys her day at the beach with Dragon.

The final pages of the book include “The Dragon’s Water Safety
Rhyme,” a safety checklist, and a note to parents and guardians about
the most important rule: that they are responsible for being alert when
their children are in or near the water—any water. It is all excellent
information to help parents and their children avoid risky situations
around the water.

This hardcover book has appealing pencil-crayon illustrations and a
charming story. It is a fine resource for safety teaching and will be a
terrific addition to any home, school, or community library. Highly
recommended.
