Review

This slim volume provides an excellent introduction to wildlife in
British Columbia. It divides the province into nine “eco-provinces”
based on terrain and climate. These provide the organization for the
book. The guide begins with an introduction to wildlife viewing and
photography, a description of the eco-provinces and a map, and a key to
the symbols used.

Each viewing site within a region is presented in a one-page summary
complete with full-color pictures and drawings of representative
species, as well as a map with directions. Symbols of the wildlife to be
found there are prominent at the top of each page. A small map of the
province highlighting the eco-province being discussed occupies the
upper outside corner of each page, making it easy to locate the site you
want. A second set of symbols for tourist facilities such as
interpretive displays, camping, and guided tours can be found in the
lower corners.

I most appreciated the section on responsible wildlife viewing. The
most successful viewing requires the co-operation of the other species.
When we bring respect and caring with us to our encounters with other
animals, wondrous things can happen.
