Review

This book is based on the proceedings of a symposium held at the
National Archives of Canada, October 20-22, 1988. With text in both
English and French and annotated bibliographies for further research,
this is a solid beginning for establishing historical foundations on
such topics as broadcasting in Quebec, CBC News broadcasting research,
Canadian newsreels, the news services, news anchors, the Canadian
identity, Native peoples and visible minorities, and foreign news on
Canadian television. The articles have been gathered from the original
presentations, panel discussions, and various question-and-answer
sessions from the floor. The symposium was sponsored by the Moving Image
and Sound Archives Division of the NAC, in conjunction with the
Association for the Study of Canadian Radio and Television.
Unfortunately, there is no index, which is a shame since there is quite
a broad range of issues and data scattered throughout the papers. There
are also black-and-white pictures of the participants. A good purchase
for the media collection of most academic libraries.
