Review

This quilting book for beginners is a basic primer, eschewing any
history of quilting or indepth discussion of this ancient craft. The
materials, techniques, and projects are correspondingly simple.

The basic sewing and quilting supplies necessary for quilting are
described and illustrated. Diagrams of the various stitches are
accompanied by captioned, numbered steps to facilitate easy learning.
The projects are presented in order of difficulty, ranging from simple
applique, to book bags and pillows and large items such as lap quilts.
Finishing touches (binding, labelling, etc.) complete this how-to book.

This is a very user-friendly craft book for children. Alternatives for
materials are given when practical (e.g., substituting cotton flannel if
quilt batting cannot be purchased). There are useful tips interspersed
through the text. Each quilting project has a specific set of materials
and the instructions are laid out in easy-to-follow steps. An “other
ideas” section provides alternative decorative ideas, construction
techniques, sizes, etc., for each craft. The projects are organized to
build quilting skills as the crafter progresses through them and
acquires increments of learning. Diagrams accompanying the projects are
colorful, of a good size, and easy to follow. Recommended.
