Review

Franklin’s Neighbourhood, a new title in the popular Franklin the
Turtle series, is actually written by Sharon Jennings rather than
Paulette Bourgeois, although the latter is credited on the cover. The
book begins in the familiar pattern of detailing what Franklin can
accomplish and then setting up the current dilemma, this time about a
school art project. Franklin has trouble choosing what he likes best
about his neighbourhood to draw, so he asks his classmates about their
choices. Each one sounds perfect, as Franklin recalls enjoyable times he
had in each place, and he eventually realizes that it’s the people he
treasures most. He surprises his classmates with a picture of all his
neighbours, including themselves. This is a joyful book, full of happy
memories and appreciation of helpful adults, and Brenda Clark’s
expressive illustrations, prepared with the assistance of Shelley
Southern, aptly portrays that joy. The colourful fall setting and school
scenes make it a perfect classroom companion to Franklin Goes to School
and Franklin’s New Friends, and it is a natural choice for introducing
a “community helpers” theme.

Franklin Is Messy, originally published in 1994, is reissued in a
paperback and read-along cassette set. The story is a gentle
remonstrance about the value of tidying up, as Franklin’s friends are
inconvenienced by his messy ways. Franklin learns his lesson, and
discovers that neatness has its own rewards. The story is read by
Paulette Bourgeois, with one side having muted turn-the-page prompts,
and with the TV series theme music (composed by Bruce Cockburn)
included. The author’s clear narration brings the story to life, with
vocal inflection and emphasis contributing to a child’s understanding
of the printed word. Both are recommended.
