Review
Animals of the arctic are the subjects of this juvenile counting book,
which also functions as an introduction to arctic wild life and Inuit
social life. Vladyana Krykorka’s striking impressions of ice, sky, and
water evoke feelings of vast energy and movement in the arctic
landscapes. The textures and details of fur, skin, and grass add warmth
to the scenes. The prominent eyes of the animals draw the reader’s
attention to their exquisite beauty.
The animals are briefly described and labeled with the number they
represent. The Inuit word for each animal appears at the bottom of each
page. A section titled “The Arctic World of Michael Kusugak and His
Family” relates anecdotal experiences and facts about arctic life. A
short glossary is included at the end of the book. Recommended as a
learning tool and visual treat.
