Review

This new edition of The Dark, which was first published in 1979, will
introduce a familiar Robert Munsch theme to a new generation of
children.

When Jule Ann releases the Dark from the cookie jar, it gobbles up
shadows until it becomes as big as a hill. Her parents try to chase it
away, but it is so dark outside that “they could not even find the
door to come back in.” Jule Ann lures the Dark back into the cookie
jar with a piece of shadow it has missed. The jar is sealed and taken
away in a garbage truck.

Like most of Robert Munsch’s stories, The Dark is fun to read aloud
and may prove therapeutic for children who are afraid of the dark.

The illustrations by Michael Martchenko, who has collaborated with
Munsch on 18 previous books, are full of amusing details. Highly
recommended.
