Review

“[T]he first woman school principal and the first woman to practise
medicine in Canada,” Emily Stowe was also a leading voice in the
struggle for women’s right to vote in Canada. This well-researched and
accessible account of Stowe’s lifelong pursuit of equality of
opportunity for women and the tremendous obstacles she encountered is
attractively designed, with informative sidebars and an appealing
combination of text and illustration on each page. A helpful chronology
is also provided.

A notable drawback is the absence of sources for quoted material;
elementary-level books should not be exempt from the requirements of
basic bibliographic procedure. This is an unfortunate lapse in an
otherwise splendid treatment. Highly recommended.
