Review

The Encyclopedia of Theatre Dance in Canada is an essential reference
book for anyone with an interest in ballet and modern dance performance.
Over 20 years in development and comprising 150 years of Canadian dance,
this book has clearly been a labor of love for many people. The book is
a feast for casual browsers as well as a key source for more serious
researchers, with 300 entries written by well-known dancers, critics,
and historians. It includes detailed entries on avant-garde and ballet
performers as well as on more obscure dance artists of times past. Brief
descriptions and program notes for many dance pieces are also included.

Despite its riches, the current edition is just beginning to account
for the important players in the Canadian dance scene, past and present.
Everyone with a stake in this scene will wonder why certain people have
been excluded and others included. Some little-known dancers are treated
to lengthy bios, where others, more well known, are treated
peremptorily. Nevertheless, this volume will be a great resource for a
variety of readers.
