Review

This collection of interviews with such writers as Guy Gavriel Kay,
William Gibson, and W.P. Kinsella helps to dispel the myth that writers
of science fiction, fantasy, and horror have little to offer the serious
reader. Each interview is preceded by a short biography of the writer.
Van Belkom elicits from his interview subjects their reasons for writing
in their chosen genre and their reasons for doing so in Canada. Most of
these writers were not born in Canada but have chosen to write here for
various personal reasons. Canada has long been a haven for speculative
writers, perhaps because the lack of a specific Canadian identity opens
the door for all types of imaginative scenarios. This interesting and
informative book will be of particular interest to fans of science
fiction, fantasy, and horror.
