Review

Maddie is a 9-year-old girl whose greatest desire is to become goalie of
a hockey team. She overcomes all resistance by her family members, who
insist that girls cannot play hockey, let alone tend goal. With the help
of her brother, Alexander, she manages to prove to all the nonbelievers
and to herself what she can do when she gets a chance to be the star
goalie against the rival “Spiders.”

This beginning novel for young readers would be suitable for children
in grades 1 to 4. The language and large type are clear and easy to
read; the story is funny and interesting; and Gay’s illustrations are
delightful. Leblanc should be commended for the frank and honest way in
which she addresses the issue of sexism and its harmful affects on young
girls. Recommended.
