Review

Most children love to watch a circus. For those who dream of joining it,
nowadays that dream can come true. Many large cities have full-time
circus schools and clown colleges; as well, vacation resorts and summer
camps offer trapeze and high-wire training as an activity. This book
looks at what it takes to become a high-wire acrobat, circus clown, or
juggler.

As in other volumes in the Crabapples series, Bobbie Kalman engages her
readers with crisp text and eye-catching photography, which usually
features models the same age as her targeted audience. She also
emphasizes safety and proper supervision in every chapter (though
parents may want to lock up the good china before their young readers
get to the chapter on balancing dishes). A glossary of circus
terminology explaining such colorful circus words as “ponger,”
“shanty,” and “kinker” concludes this highly recommended book.
