Review

“A woman’s work is never done” is shown to be particularly true of
the 19th-century woman in this user-friendly look at the lives of girls
and women in the previous century. Topics covered include education,
clothing, marriage, and childbirth. Young girls reading this book will
be amazed at the sheer amount and variety of household work they would
have been expected to accomplish. The illustrations, a mixture of
reproductions of period paintings, photographs, and sketches, occupy
more than half the book.

All in all, an entertaining introduction that should inspire students
to engage in further reading on the subject. Recommended.
