Review

This important work outlines a new field of law in Canada, a field that
has developed in the cross-section where sexuality and civil rights
overlap. Kathleen A. Lahey, a law professor at Queen’s University in
Kingston, Ontario, casts her net widely with discussions of the Charter
of Rights, discrimination litigation, statistics, employment
discrimination, and same-sex benefits. She brings a wealth of knowledge
and personal experience to her narrative, and her documentation is
impressive. Unfortunately, a laborious style and a surfeit of legalese
makes Are We ‘Persons’ Yet? inaccessible to the general reader. As a
legal handbook, however, the book should prove useful to a select
audience of graduate students and lawyers.
