Review

These are poems of intelligence and compassion. They are often personal,
but never confessional or self-centred. The poet is at ease writing
about her childhood and can also deal with world events (like the
Holocaust) and with works of art by the likes of Vermeer, Alberto
Giacometti, and Alex Colville. Welch was born in Luxembourg and lived in
the United States before taking up a post at Mount Allison University in
Sackville, New Brunswick. She maintains a cosmopolitan point of view
while residing in small-town New Brunswick. Although her style is a bit
austere, her work is solid, carefully structured, and diverse in subject
matter.
