Review

In Bobbie Kalman’s Lands, Peoples and Cultures series, countries are
profiled in three separate but interconnected books. All three books
follow the same format. The subject is broken down into 10 or more short
chapters. Each chapter combines numerous full-color photos with concise
fact-packed text.

In India the Culture, the general theme is what makes the Indian
civilization unique. Chapters include “Rooted in Religion,”
“Indian Art,” “Everyday Crafts,” “Festivals and
Celebrations,” “Seven Wedding Promises,” “Performing Arts,”
and “The Flavours of India.” India the Land focuses on the physical
and social geography of the subcontinent, highlighting India’s
variety. Chapters in this volume include “A Country of Villages,”
“India’s People,” “Growing Cities,” “From the Land and
Sea,” “Feeding a Crowded Country,” “Cottage Industries,”
“Busy Bazaars,” “Exotic Wildlife, and “India’s Challenges.”
India the People looks at the country from an anthropological point of
view in the chapters “Living in Harmony,” “India’s Ancient
History,” “Family Life,” “Living in the City,” “Village
Life,” “Language and Education,” “Occupations” “The Cycle of
Poverty,” and “Indian Customs.”

The result is a collection of eye-catching volumes that are terrific
for both classroom research or general-interest reading. Highly
recommended.
