Review

These four new additions to the Sports in Action series join the 14
other volumes, which cover in-line skating, lacrosse, hockey, soccer,
basketball, baseball, gymnastics, swimming, volleyball, figure skating,
football, horseback riding, golf, and martial arts. Each volume traces
the history of the sport, discusses the skill requirements and
techniques, identifies the equipment used, and outlines the basic rules
of play and safety requirements.

The table of contents for each book is well organized into chapters
with subheadings. John Crossingham’s writing is straightforward and
direct, making the text easy to read for young sports enthusiasts.
Sidebars highlight special information. Supporting the text are Marc
Crabtree’s splendid action photos and Bonna Rouse’s simple
illustrations, which give clear visual examples of how to develop,
refine, and perform the skills in the particular sport. A glossary at
the end defines words used in that sport’s lingo. A concise index
references specific topics throughout the text.

The Sports in Action series will prove a popular addition to school and
public library shelves. Highly recommended.
