Review

When Fiona Larsen, a streetwise single waitress in a poor district of
Copenhagen, now under German occupation, agreed to shelter a little girl
she knew little about her except that she was Jewish. Fiona had been
told that safe passage from Denmark would be found for the child within
six months, but three years have passed. Now almost 6, the girl is
finding friends and will have to begin school soon. It is becoming
dangerous as the Germans close in on Jews in the neighborhood. Fiona
receives an urgent message: “FLEE TONIGHT.” Whether or not to do so
is the first dilemma confronting Fiona.

Intensely moving, filled with suspense, and brilliantly written, this
expertly translated story deserves to be read again and again.
