Review

Andrew Weiner is one of the best writers of science-fiction short
stories in Canada today. He has written extensively for science-fiction
magazines, and his work has been translated into French, Italian, Czech,
Polish, and Japanese.

This Is the Year Zero is a collection of 13 previously published
stories, all with the central themes of time travel, alternate
realities, and encounters with aliens. “Alien in the Lake” is the
story of a murdered alien and the trial of Gus Burgess. “In Dreams”
recounts the fate of Zoe Jensen and the rest of the crew of the
world’s first starship. “This Is the Year Zero” tells of the
arrival of an alien species and their brightly painted vehicles, who
change the world forever. “Streak” is set in the Toronto SkyDome,
where the aliens go to catch a baseball game.

Weiner’s tireless imagination, literate style, and wry sense of humor
can all be enjoyed in this great collection of stories.
