Review

Although there is a significant body of sociological work on American
Jewry, studies of Canada’s Jews are comparatively rare. This
meticulous social, cultural, and economic study of Jews in Canada was
first published in the 1930s and remains unsurpassed as a major
contribution to the social demography of ethnic communities. Its 31
chapters cover almost every aspect of Jewish social life. There are
numerous statistical tables, a statistical appendix, and an insightful
foreword by S.M. Lipset. The book is written with a minimum of
sociological jargon, and would be of value to those involved in such
disciplines as history, demography, economics, political science, social
work, sociology, ethnic studies, and, of course, Jewish studies.
