In this wordless book, Ben aims to find an environmentally friendly home for his two rabbits. We are shown a barren view of the city of the future where he lives, and through illustrations in panels, ranging from one-inch-square boxes to full- and double-page spreads, we follow his adventure. Ben leaves home, packing food and leaving information as to his whereabouts for his mother. Crossing the city, he boards a space shuttle and proceeds to visit various planets, meeting aliens who continue with him on his quest. Finally, he finds the ideal home for his rabbits, who have multiplied while on the spacecraft. Ben bids them farewell and returns home to his loving mother.
With Ben’s Bunny Trouble I have an increased respect for wordless picture books. Ben is a practical, responsible young man and we admire his matter-of-fact, stalwart efforts on behalf of his rabbits. His return to security after such drama is also satisfying. Pictures by Dirk van Stralen, created with pencil and completed on a computer, lead one logically through Ben’s experiences. There is much detail to pore over, creating endless possibilities for discussion. Children not yet able to read words will feel encouraged to “read” the story on their own or to a parent or sibling and create invaluable bonds at the same time.
This rich book is aimed at children aged 4–8, but many older people will also enjoy it. Recommended.
