Sprout, a young guinea pig, loves his grandma but is nervous when she invites him and his sister away on an overnight trip. He is torn between his fear of being without his parents and his interest in seeing new things. Plucking up his courage he agrees to go along, taking his cuddly toy Flatmouse for company. Grandma recognizes Sprout’s anxiety and wisely stops for many phone calls home and lots of snacks and ice cream along the way. With all the interesting things to experience, cuddling up with Grandma at night, and all the treats and reassurance he receives Sprout has a great time. By the time he gets home, bringing gifts for his mom and dad, he can hardly wait for his next trip with Grandma.

Ruth Ohi has illustrated more than 40 books for children, and this is the third one in the series written about a family of guinea pig characters. The qualities are so human and realistic I forgot on occasion I was actually reading about animals! Despite the light-hearted approach of the book, Ohi clearly understands how real such fears are to the young. She also recognizes the sensitive and wise support required by adults to deal with them. On this occasion the success of this trip is all down to heroic Grandma, who foresaw all Sprout’s concerns and found a practical way to reassure him or take his mind off his anxieties.

The illustrations are bright, colourful watercolours providing much expression and detail for a small child to ponder over. Sprout’s moods, ranging from anxiety to interest to happiness, are reflected throughout the story.

This book was included in “Best Books for Kids and Teens 2008” created by the Canadian Children’s Book Centre and was included in the Ontario Library Association’s Top 10 list. While the story could be used to prepare a young child about to spend a night away from their parents, any child between ages three and seven will enjoy the story for the pure satisfaction it provides. Recommended.
