Each one of the 100 travel destinations presented in this very attractive coffee-table book is allotted two to four pages—enough space for at least one full-page photograph (some have double-page spreads) and several smaller ones. Each destination includes a brief description that provides just enough historical information and tourist highlights to inspire the reader to want to know more. But the best part of the book is George Fischer’s stunning colour photography. Crisply reproduced on glossy pages, the pictures are as memorable in print as one imagines the destinations to be in real life.
The variety of destinations included in this volume is equally impressive. Hudson and Fischer broadened their definition of destination to include not only formal events, such as the Montreal Jazz Festival, but also informal activities such as skating on the Rideau Canal. They also manage to showcase such natural marvels such as the Bay of Fundy Tides, Glacier Lake, and Mount Logan alongside such architectural accomplishments as the CN Tower and the Canadian Mint building.
The numbering of the entries is arbitrary, with the first destination considered as memorable as the 100th. Although all provinces and territories are represented, ice and snow (not surprisingly) play a prominent role in many of the shots, rendering the book more notable for its presentation of the rugged Canadian landscape than it is for urban destinations.
One potential problem is the book’s binding, which may not stand up to heavy use. That said, Unforgettable Canada will be thoroughly enjoyed by any traveller (armchair or otherwise) looking to explore Canada.
