Review

Gaspereau Press celebrates its tenth anniversary of publishing fine editions of new Canadian literature with a three-volume set: one of selected poetry, one of selected prose, and a full annotated bibliography of the books and ephemera Gaspereau Press has printed to date. Volume 1, selected poetry from their catalogue, includes 25 different poets’ work, ranging from newer writers such as Ian Letourneau and Alison Smith to established award-winners such as George Elliott Clarke, Jan Zwicky, and Robert Bringhurst. The book is simply presented, with the poems being sequenced by the last name of the author and then chronologically.

Not all books or poets published by Gaspereau are represented here. Instead, the collection showcases “a sample of what we felt was the most significant work from the Gaspereau Press library,” according to editor Andrew Steeves. The book’s quality is high, although the book is plainer than Gaspereau’s monographic works. An excellent short survey of the fine work consistently produced by this small press.
