Review

In need of jobs during their summer vacation, Angela and Emmie start up a pet care business. Their first customer is a family friend who lives by himself on Mason’s Island out in the harbour of Mahone Bay and has a cat needing care. While visiting the island the girls have fun exploring and looking for imaginary pirate treasure. But during their wanderings they find real hidden treasure and must act quickly to discover who left it there. Before long the girls find themselves caught up in a dangerous adventure where only their quick thinking can save them.

The Angela and Emmie Adventure series is situated in Nova Scotia. Schwarzkopf provides lovely detail about the town and its inhabitants through the eyes of the story’s young protagonists. Both girls are likeable and readers will readily identify with them. The book comprises 20 short chapters that are lively, fun, and easy to read.

Danger at Mason’s Island is a Hackmatack Children’s Choice Award finalist for 2007–08 and a Silver Birch Express Award selection. Recommended.
