Review

Hockey Coaching is a basic manual designed for coaches who work with
beginning hockey players through to age 9. The practices inspired by the
author’s teaching principles—learn by doing and enjoy the
game—will help to produce skilled hockey players, great teamwork, and
creative as well as exciting hockey. Wahlsten and Molloy’s system
combines the best of European and North American hockey strategies and
training.

The first half of the book focuses on the efficient use of the rink and
on understanding and learning the game. The second half of the book
deals with practice cards that can be used to plan a practice. In
addition to the wealth of hockey coaching information provided in the
book, there are diagrams and charts that describe every drill in detail.
Even a coach with only a superficial knowledge of the sport would be
able to implement the authors’ system with little difficulty.

More than a series of different drills and exercises, Hockey Coaching
presents standards for player development.
