Review

P.T. Vermin, “ringmouse extraordinaire,” invites readers to participate in a surreal circus adventure. Each page showcases a different optical illusion under a big top tent. Readers can transform parrots Winkin, Blinkin, and Chuckles into pirates by turning the book upside down, feed jelly beans to the Candy Gators by bringing the book up close, and spin Zippy the Zebra Racer’s wheels by moving the book in small, quick circles. P.T. Vermin is a witty master of ceremonies with a penchant for alliteration: “Delight at the dramatic and daring dance moves of ISADORA DUMPTY (sister of the famous Dave Dumpty) atop a perilous platform!” In case readers are stumped by some of the eye-crossing tricks, the solutions are explained at the end.

Wallace Edwards’s intricate watercolour and pencil illustrations are mesmerizing. The curious circus performers include elephants, toads, and a squid. The audience members are equally fascinating, and keen observers will spot a robot, giant foot, and Harry Houdini look-alike in the stands.

Not to be missed, The Painted Circus is “The Greatest Show on Earth.” Highly recommended.
