Review

Brian McFarlane has become the dean of Canadian hockey writers. Over the
past four decades, he has written comprehensive histories, children’s
books, and short stories relating to our national pastime. McFarlane is
a skilled and prolific writer, not unlike his father who wrote the
popular Hardy Boys series under the pseudonym Franklin W. Dixon.

The Best of It Happened in Hockey is a compilation of over 250 entries
having to do with the sport of hockey. Although most concern happenings
in the National Hockey League, some are derived from the worlds of
university, amateur, and international hockey. Each entry runs from one
to three pages in chapters that highlight star performers, goaltenders,
fighters, and playoff heroes; hockey folklore; significant achievements;
and strange happenings behind the scenes. Mcfarlane’s book is filled
with entertaining tidbits, most of which will elicit from readers a
smile or a chuckle.
