Review

“Around the World,” which largely provides information related to the International Ice Hockey Federation, the remainder of the book’s contents deal principally with facts and figures related to the players and teams of the National Hockey League, with some limited content also being devoted to topics related to the junior teams and players in the Canadian Hockey League.

The text, which is composed largely of lists, with Wayne Gretzky having the most individual entries, is interrupted by the occasional black and white photo or cartoon-like illustration plus brief “By the numbers” facts. In terms of the lists’ contents, think largely in terms of superlatives—the most, the fastest, etc.—though some sections, such as “Did You Know?,” include paragraphs of text on topics like Equipment Innovations and First Number-One Draft Picks (and How They Did). Sources of the information are generally not provided, though a few entries do reference websites. An error occurs on page 15, “Longest NHL Games,” where the figures shown are just overtime minutes rather than total game time. Recommended.
