Review

Paddling the Sunshine Coast comprises a selection of sea-kayaking day
trips along the stretch of coastline from Desolation Sound in the north
to Howe Sound in the south, along the east side of the Strait of Georgia
in British Columbia. Written by a pair of paddlers who discovered sea
kayaking in midlife, the book is enthusiastic in tone, but cautions
readers about the sport’s risks and emphasizes safety.

For each trip, the information includes how to get to the launch point,
warnings (mostly regarding tides, winds, and currents), a description of
the trip, an estimate of trip time, and a map. (The hand-drawn maps
should not be relied on; detailed charts should be used.) Photographs,
illustrations, and snippets of information about birds appear throughout
the book.

A detailed introductory section covers the history of the area,
weather, safety, and low-impact camping practices.

Paddling the Sunshine Coast is a valuable introduction to the region
and would be very useful as a trip planner.
