Review

This comprehensive guide to fly-fishing for Atlantic salmon is both
entertaining and informative. Eleven well-written chapters tell the
anglers when and where to fish, what flies to use, how to tie the flies
onto the line and at the vise (color plates show the final product), how
to fish the flies and play and land the fish, and how to behave on
stream with fellow anglers. In the chapter on etiquette and ethics,
there is a telling portrait of anglers who “take too seriously the act
of catching a fish.” Two appendixes provide up-to-date information on
license fees, contacts, and limits, as well as 1991–96 statistics for
rivers in Maine, Quebec, and the Maritime provinces. The Atlantic Salmon
Handbook would be a welcome addition to any fisher’s library.
