Review

After an argument with her best friend, Edwina, and bored with school, Millie convinces her mother to let her visit her friend Molly, whom social services has sent to live with a farming family just north of Toronto.

Millie is privileged enough to live in a comfortable home with servants, and to be able to attend school full-time. In 1915 Toronto, not all children are so lucky. Millie quickly learns that her time visiting Molly will not be a holiday. Both girls are expected to work all day, keeping house and taking care of the hens and the cows. But when Millie meets a runaway from another local farm who is escaping brutal conditions, she realizes just how lucky she is.

As with other Our Canadian Girl books, Dandelion Days combines an engaging plot and sympathetic characters with historical insight. The author pays careful attention to ensuring that the history in the book is that which would be relevant and immediate to contemporary readers. Significant action and character development is packed into this slim volume. Highly recommended.
