Review

Time, a difficult concept for a preschooler, is explained in this book. “In one second, you can bounce a ball … or say hello.… In an afternoon, you can swing and climb and ride.” Exploring time from seconds to years and through past, present, and future, each example of time is taken from well-known daily life events.

Originally published in 1960, Gleick’s text has been newly illustrated and republished. The text conveys the difficult concept in an easy to read and reread manner. Jocelyn’s intricate collage illustrations reinvent this book with updated images and multicultural characters. Early readers are likely to examine every inch of the colourful whimsical images while learning all about time. Highly recommended.
