Review

This book certainly lives up to its name as it is, indeed, a most practical guide to one of the fastest growing hobbies of our time. The text is clear and easy to understand, as are the plentiful illustrations.

Adam begins at the beginning, devoting a full 50 pages to the basics of planning a garden. From observing site drainage and sun orientation to determining how the space will be use, she guides the reader through a necessary exploration of how the property looks before any planting takes place. Guidance regarding designing any size of landscape project is also provided. Budgeting suggestions and tips for creating a five-year plan are valuable tips for keeping costs in check.

The book is chock full of detailed how-to projects that will help turn inspiration into an enjoyable garden. Full-colour photos of suggested plants for a range of situations—hedging, shade gardens, ground covers, et cetera—are helpful additions, as are simple drawings that illustrate complex topics such as pruning. Notes regarding often-overlooked topics such as construction and care of hard surfaces are also included, as are suggestions regarding lawn care. A chapter on low-maintenance gardening will help readers ensure they get the most out of their garden with the least amount of effort.

A home gardener’s reference library is another useful addition.
