Review

The fourth book in the Dot to Dot in the Sky series begins by explaining the difference between astronomy and astrology, as well as the relationship between the two sciences. This introductory section includes a chart to help determine your zodiac sign according to the system used commonly in newspapers, and an updated system based on the modern positions of the sun and stars. This is followed by an explanation of the dot-to-dot system of trying to locate constellations in the night sky.

The main body of the work goes sign by sign, telling the ancient Greek myth associated with the character and how they became affixed in the sky as constellations. Each sign is accompanied by a full-page colour illustration of the myth, a “Space Notes” section describing astronomical facts about the constellation (stars or planets found within, associated meteor showers, etc.), and a “Find This Constellation” section with a star map and an explanation of how to connect the dots in the sky.

While the myths would be enjoyable for a young reader, the “Space Notes” are sometimes too technical even with help from the glossary. Directions for finding each constellation are difficult to follow as they are often based on points of reference in constellations that have not yet been described or, in some cases, provide directions that differ from the orientation of the associated map. The fun glow-in-the-dark star map compensates for this somewhat. Recommended.
