Pup and Hound Catch a Thief draws young readers into a mystery about missing objects that involves intriguing sounds and broken piggy banks. The two canine friends suspect that Cat is behind the mischief. However, at the end of the story, Cat turns out to be a robbery detective.

In their next adventure, Pup and Hound, while out looking for fun, discover an egg in the long grass. Concerned about the soon-to-hatch egg, they interview many birds as they try to find a proper parent for it. An interesting twist at the end will delight young readers who love reptiles.

Pup and Hound Play Copycats has the lovable duo romping through the pages copying each other. Hound, the bigger dog, wants to lead. Pup is tireless and eager to please. The story’s gentle message of “small but mighty” will resonate with young readers.

In Pup and Hound Scare a Ghost, the canine friends lead readers on a ghost-tracking escapade. While being tracked, the apparition transforms into several funny shapes. Linda Hendry’s comical illustrations are fun to predict.

All four of the books in this entertaining adventure series will engage beginning readers with their simple plots and easy vocabulary. Clever visual clues in Hendry’s illustrations move the stories along in a logical way. Ample repetition provides necessary linguistic scaffolding and the books are a perfect size for small hands to hold. Highly recommended.
