Review

Reports of apparitions of Christ have a long history, but are also
surprisingly frequent today. In a culture that emphasizes the rational
and the material, how does one account for such expressions of the
mystical and spiritual? This is the central question addressed in
Visions of Jesus, a book that is reminiscent of William James’s
classic Varieties of Religious Experience. Phillip Wiebe, who is
professor of philosophy and Dean of Religious Studies at Trinity Western
University, offers a wide-ranging and lucid review of important issues
in religion, psychology, philosophy, and neuroscience. Like James before
him, he is both open-minded and careful in his exploration of mysterious
phenomena.
